Keri’s Story: Truck Driving

Keri is a single mom with two, now adult, kids. She told her WIOA Case Manager, Cynthia Humphrey, how difficult it was to find time to work and go to school when her kids were younger. Even though she has worked in an office most of her life, she was very interested in truck driving, a non-traditional career path for women.

Through the WIOA program Keri participated in several assessments that gauged her interests and aptitudes. It is imperative in career planning that people, regardless of their gender, are allowed to follow their dreams and utilize their interests and skills.

Through the WIOA program, Keri was approved for CDL training at Action Career Training in May 2020. While in training she stayed in contact with her case manager and provided her regular progress reports. She was so excited about learning new things and meeting milestones (passing tests). She successfully completed her training in July 2020. Keri said, “Without WIOA and truck driving I am not sure how I would have survived.”

Keri found employment at Freymiller Inc. in September 2020. In February 2021 Keri said she finally got her own truck at Freymiller; she said, “Thanks to you and the WIOA program. I owe so much gratitude to both for my life today. Dreams really do come true. Thank you again!!!”
